I am a mixed media artist living in Durham, NC. My artistic practice is deeply rooted in my childhood growing up in a house overflowing with books and artifacts. Hidden in a corner, learning how to decipher hieroglyphics or the physics of hot air balloon travel are equally likely examples of how I may have spent a Saturday afternoon. This foundation of curiosity and imagination inspires how I approach my art today; the pages from the types of books I was never allowed to draw in I now drench in paint and tear into pieces and form new connections between ideas, between millennia. I spend hours browsing open-domain images, searching for photographs which I digitally alter and infuse with vibrant color, awakening forgotten figures and moments. To these people, texts and images, now transformed, I add monoprints, texture, and mark making, layer upon layer, until the piece declares itself finished. My process both honors the past and challenges the narratives I grew up learning. It is deeply personal to me while also belonging to our shared human history of struggle, exploration, and creation.
