Psanky Quilt by Leen el Naccash
26.5 x 26.5;
dyed eggshells, paper;
2024
My paper art is a combination of collage and quilting, often paired with Ukrainian pysanky.
I have always been interested in color and geometry and I enjoy the tactile process of sewing through paper. I appreciate repetition and order, and therefore my work often is very structured, based on a repeat pattern or a grid.
I enjoy working with a variety of types of paper, and colored waxed linen threads, the bolder the contrasts, the better. A lot of the papers I use are left over scraps from book making and other art projects.
My creative process is heavily influenced by my background in quilting and other geometric arts such as Ukrainian pysanky.
My piece “Pysanky Quilt” combines the art of pysanky with paper quilting, with hand stitching through multiple layers of paper. The eggs bear designs typical of hand sewn quilts.
