‘ESL’ reflects my experience growing up Mexican-American. In kindergarten, I realized I didn’t understand English when my class checked out books, and I cried with confusion. Soon after, I was placed in ESL and quickly learned, with Goodnight Moon as my first full book in English. This screenprint captures those emotions through teardrops, images from the book, and the phrase “I don’t understand” in Spanglish, layered with a riso print of myself to show the blending of languages.
