E pluripuss unum by Matt McCarthy
14"h x 11"w (Framed to 15x12x1.25");
Layered Paper Collage;
2025
"E pluripuss unum" is a pun on the Latin phrase "Out of many, one." This piece uses images of two cats to convey both isolation and togetherness. Up close, the layered cats evoke disharmony in their separation and chromatic aberration. They are detached and suspicious, with the negative space stripes mimicking the window blinds through which one might spy on their neighbors. However, when viewed at a distance, the separations disappear and the layers blend together to form a new, grey cat. With enough distance and perspective the dividing lines disappear and we become one.
