The J Chou Lobby Bar at the JB Duke Hotel served as staging for my painting "Chill." That late August evening, a cheerful covey of customers sat down to eat, drink, and chat. The Stevie Wonder-sweetness of Motown music sugar-coated their conversations. Four baristas, seemingly six or seven with their speed, served up conviviality and cocktails. The tail-end-of-summer sunset glowed in Turner reds. I worked with staccato speed to capture color and light, bar rails and cocktails, as my acrylics swiftly dried, seizing the August eve.
