12"x12";
Collage, paper, buttons, paint, sewing patterns;
2025

BELOVED started as a study for a much larger work. I was trying to explore several composition ideas and decided to make a couple of 12”x12” works to see which composition to use for the larger canvas. I wanted to use these studies to explore new techniques like using stencils, multiple painting patterns and ultimately buttons.

Once I started working on this energetic thistle composition I quickly realized I had to figure out how to represent the spiky fluffy way thistles bloom. My usual approach with paper seemed not nearly dynamic enough. I spent a good bit of time blocked trying to figure out how to proceed. Then one afternoon I accidentally spilled all these red buttons all over my studio floor while I was reorganizing (aka procrastinating) and it occurred to me they could be the perfect medium for showing texture and depth in the larger fully bloomed thistle.

Ultimately neither of the studies I did ended up being what I wanted for the large canvas which still remains empty, but the two smaller works have ended up expanding my creative processes in amazing ways.
