EXHIBITION STATEMENT
In my recent practice I build a large wall collage, a “texture matrix,” from paper, tape, and other recycled materials, and then make multiple rubbings from it. All the pieces in this exhibit began as rubbings from Texture Matrix 5, a portion of which is included in the exhibit. Though each work is unique, the common underlying matrix reveals itself in the root/branch motif referenced by the show’s title.
In the Above Yet Beneath series, the matrix-based rubbings are made with water-soluble crayon and wax crayon, accentuated with watercolor and colored pencil. I then cut shapes out of the paper. Some matrix-based rubbings have two layers so that a second rubbing, made with wax pastel on Yupo, is visible through cutouts in the top sheet. Others are a single sheet where the cutouts reveal light reflected from the wall on which they are hung.
The Radicle View pieces are mixed media rubbings on paper, mounted on panel. “Radicle”is a term for the part of a plant embryo that develops into the primary root, or a rootlike subdivision of a nerve or vein. Radical View alludes to the root/branch and window pane motifs that characterize the series. Rubbings obviously explore surface texture, but they also show what’s beneath the surface. I am intrigued by the play between what is hidden and revealed, and how that play makes space for mystery.
