Jurors Statement
It is an honor and pleasure to serve as jurors for the 2023 Durham Art Guild Exhibition. The Durham Art Guild (DAG) has a long history of nurturing emerging artists and exhibiting excellent works that educate and engage our community. We are proud to support DAG, the vibrant city of Durham and the many talented regional artists here.
For this exhibition, there were 550 artworks submitted of various media and scale. It was a challenging task to narrow down our selections, especially since we were viewing the works virtually. We focused on the formal elements of the works including line, medium, color, light, space, composition, and style. In addition, we considered the broader concepts of context and our personal response to the work. We were impressed by the submissions this year and the talent of the artists. Further, we admired the beauty and rich content of the artwork and the powerful, relevant messages conveyed.
Thank you, Liz Gage, Dara Baldwin, and William Paul Thomas, for the opportunity to be a part of this exciting exhibition. All the artists who submitted should be proud of their accomplishments and continue to refine their art practices. We believe in the power of art to build community and encourage support of artists at all levels.
Enjoy the exhibition and start collecting!
With gratitude and our best,
Marjorie Hodges and Allen Thomas
